A 4.5-magnitude earthquake was felt shortly before noon in the western Peloponnese regional units of Ilia and Messinia.
The National Observatory of Athens’ Institute of Geodynamics reported that the epicenter of the tremor was located four kilometers west-northwest of the village of Giannitsochori, in Zacharo, at a depth of 5 kilometers.
“This is a tremor that is not a matter of concern. Recently there has been a series of seismic vibrations in the area, but it is a completely common phenomenon,” seismologist Vasilis Papazachos told Katherimini.
Greece lies in one of the world’s most seismically active areas, and earthquakes are common. However, fatalities and major damage are rare occurrences.
