A prosecutor in northern Greece on Friday charged a 87-year-old man confined to a wheelchair with attempted murder after he tried to kill his 79-year-old bed-ridden wife with a kitchen knife.
The suspect was ordered to appear before an investigative magistrate.
The incident was revealed on Friday afternoon when the domestic worker who occasionally supervises the couple and helps with their care went to their apartment in the Polichni suburb of Thessaloniki and found the victim with extensive bruising to her face and a knife wound to her neck. The 87-year-old reportedly told the worker that her husband had tried to kill her.
The suspect was found lying on the floor with a bloody knife next to him.
The police officers who were called to the scene searched the apartment and found no signs of a break-in. In addition to the kitchen knife, officers seized two other kitchen knives to determine whether they were related to the incident.
Meanwhile, the victim is being treated under sedation in the Intensive Care Unit of the Ippokrateio Hospital, following surgery for her neck injury. Her condition appears to have stabilized but remains critical.
