The draft bill for enacting measures designed to support families and middle-income households, entitled “Taxation reform for the demographic issue and the middle class – Support measures for society and the economy”, is to be discussed and and put to a vote in the Parliament plenary on Thursday.

The bill includes taxation measures amounting to 1.7 billion euros that will benefit some four million tax payers and has been approved by Parliament’s Economic Affairs Committee with the support of ruling New Democracy. It was opposed by the parties SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and Nea Aristera while the remaining opposition parties intend to adopt a position during the plenary session.

So far, four amendments have been tabled alongside the draft bill by SYRIZA-PA and two by KKE. These mainly propose the elimination or reduction of VAT on certain classes of products and in certain regions, and the abolition of presumed income and tax breaks for small businesses.
