Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, concluding the debate on the articles in the Standing Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice regarding the draft law on Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), said that the government is further safeguarding its independence.
It is noted that the relevant bill concerns the reinforcement of ERT’s public character and its competitiveness in the media market, as well as the adoption of measures for the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2024/1083 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 April 2024, which establishes a common framework for media services in the internal market and amends thw European Media Freedom Act.
Marinakis rejected the opposition parties’ accusations of silencing and interference, noting that “ these were not mentioned by any of the representatives of the employees, the journalists’ associations or the National Broadcasting Council, because quite simply there is only administrative and financial supervision by the government-nothing more.”
Referring to the individual articles of the bill concerning the Innovation Centre and Educational Television, he said that “ these are very important to us; they are not at all vague but, on the contrary, they provide opportunities for ERT-on the basis of its regulations and operating law-to implement them through its board of directors, in which its employees also participate.”
