PM Mitsotakis at GenAI Summit: Building AI in the EU without losing our cultural identity

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch late Monday afternoon at the GenAI Summit. The Greek Premier discussed the importance of working with European AI companies. He spoke about the potential to create strong AI models in Europe while keeping European values, language, and culture intact. He also pointed out that developing these technologies in Europe shows that the AI industry does not have to rely entirely on the United States.

Mitsotakis highlighted Greece’s progress in digital transformation. He mentioned the establishment of the Ministry of Digital Governance in 2019 as a milestone. He noted that Greece’s government structure makes it easier to access consistent data, especially in health care, which he believes aids collaboration with tech companies.

The Prime Minister also talked about using ΑΙ to boost productivity in the public sector. He mentioned pilot projects, such as speeding up the review of notarial documents, where the processing time dropped from two hours to ten minutes. He stressed that these tools do not pose a threat to public sector jobs, helping to build trust.

On the topic of the judiciary, he explained that AI has the potential to simplify processes, reduce workloads, and allow judges to concentrate on the quality of cases. In education, he anticipated a significant transformation, as AI will facilitate personalised learning, much like the tools that students are already extensively utilising.

Mitsotakis pointed out two major concerns: first, unsupervised students using AI and its effects on education; second, the danger of interference in democracy due to advanced misinformation tools.
