Supermarket sales rose 4.38% or 548,356 euros to 13.06 billion euros in 2024 compared to the previous years, according to the 29th edition of the “Panorama of Greek Supermarkets” published by Boussias Media.
The data was drawn from the balance sheets of the 43 largest companies in the sector, excluding Lidl Hellas, which does not publish a balance sheet.
The conclusions of the publication show that 2024 was a good year for the sector from a financial point of view. Despite various problems, mainly increased operating-wage costs and inflationary pressures, organic growth and rational management led to a positive and sufficient “bottom line” in the sector and to sufficient profitability. In the coming years, companies will continue to face the challenge of efficiency through better cost management, operating costs, borrowing costs and inventory costs.
In more detail, the ten largest supermarket companies in terms of turnover showed exactly the same percentage increase in sales compared to the total of 43 companies in the sample, 4.38%, while the sales of the “ten” reached 11.99 billion euros, an amount that corresponds to 91.81% of the total sales of the 43 companies in the sample.
The highest sales in the sector and, at the same time, the greatest increase in value, were recorded by Sklavenitis, whose turnover amounted to 4.65 billion euros, increased by 336.21 million euros or 7.79% compared to 2023.
In second place was AB Vassilopoulos, with annual sales of 1.94 billion euros, decreased by 1.75% compared to 2023. In third place was Metro with a sales increase of 2.00% and an annual turnover of 1.62 billion euros.
Masoutis followed with a sales increase of 5.94%, which amounted to 1.14 billion euros, compared to 1.08 billion euros in 2023, Kritikos, with an increase of 10.78% and an additional 75.71 million euros, Pente (Galaxias), with a decrease of 3.99% and a turnover of 514.29 million euros, while the top ten were closed by Market In (418.61 million euros), Bazaar (248.39 million euros) and Chalkiadakis (239.8 million euros).
