Authorities at the northeastern border with Turkey have arrested a truck driver accused of smuggling migrants into the country in the latest of a string of similar detentions, police said Sunday.
A police statement said the overnight arrest at the Kipi border crossing followed the detection, using heart-beat monitoring equipment, of four migrants hidden inside the vehicle.
On Saturday, police near the border arrested a man found to be driving a car with eight migrants squashed into it west towards Thessaloniki. Police in the border area have made a series of arrests in the border area in recent days for migrant smuggling, after carrying out inspections on west-headed cars.
About 1,300 people have entered Greece illegally from Turkey by crossing the northeastern land border in the first two months of the year, according to UNited Nations data.
