Police launched a series of raids Friday at premises linked with people suspected of involvement in an alleged fraud scandal involving Greece’s biggest umbrella labor union.

The operation in Athens and Thessaloniki followed instructions from the financial prosecutor’s office.

The scandal broke in February after the independent authority on money laundering forwarded a report to the financial prosecutor’s office on alleged fraud in vocational training programs.

Among the people under investigation are Yiannis Panagopoulos, long-time head of the General Confederation of Greek Labor, known by its Greek initials, GSEE, that represents private sector workers. Panagopoulos has denied wrongdoing, as have the other people under investigation.

The money laundering authority’s report names six individuals and six companies which GSEE selected to handle subsidized training programs.
