New group claims responsibility for arson attack on professor’s car

A previously unknown group calling itself the “Kyriakos Xymitiris Commandos” has claimed responsibility for an arson attack on the car of a professor at the National Technical University of Athens earlier this week.

The attack occurred on Monday at the university campus in Zografou, targeting Professor Dimitris Karonis, co-author of an expert report attributing the fireball that followed the deadly 2023 Tempe train crash to engine oils.

In a lengthy post on an anarchist website, the group said it carried out the attack and accused the professor of influencing findings related to the railway disaster.

It also referenced a 2024 bomb blast at an apartment in Athens’ Ambelokipi district that killed 37-year-old Kyriakos Xymitiris, after whom the group is named.

Five people are currently on trial in connection with the Ambelokipi case, facing charges including participation in a terrorist organization, possession of explosives and causing an explosion.
