Mystery at sea after armed drone found off Lefkada

By Yiannis Souliotis for Kathimerini

Greek authorities are treating the discovery of a military-style sea drone off Lefkada as “extremely serious,” after a fisherman found the unmanned vessel trapped inside a cave with its engines still running.

The drone, identified as a MAGURA V3 model similar to those used by Ukrainian forces in Black Sea attacks, was towed to port before bomb disposal experts disabled three detonators, disconnected its batteries and secured what officials described as active explosives with a payload capacity approaching 300 kilograms.

The vessel has since been transferred to the Underwater Demolition Command for forensic examination.

Investigators from the armed forces, intelligence service, coast guard and police are examining handwritten notes found inside the drone, an unusual detail that has fueled speculation about possible provocation or sabotage. Officials believe the drone may have been intended for a kamikaze-style strike against a commercial ship or tanker.

Authorities are now trying to determine how the vessel reached the Ionian Sea and whether it was launched from a ship. The investigation remains tightly guarded.
