The Defense Ministry has approved plans to upgrade and highlight the Monument of the Unknown Soldier and its plaza, introducing changes aimed at improving accessibility, preservation and public understanding of the site.
The proposal would replace heat-retaining asphalt with gray Aliveri marble, preserving the original two-tone design while creating a more visitor-friendly surface. New plantings, shaded seating areas, routes for visitors with mobility and visual disabilities, waterproofing works, stone and metal conservation, and restoration of marble parapets along Amalias Avenue are also planned.
A redesigned lighting system would replace the current cold, intense illumination with warmer light emphasizing the monument’s central relief and surrounding walls.
The study also seeks to strengthen the monument’s historical message through informational signs and digital material accessible by QR code, encouraging visitors to engage with its commemorative purpose rather than only ceremonial attractions.
Landscape changes would improve visibility, address moisture issues and enhance the plaza’s microclimate overall, for future generations of visitors.
