The German government on Thursday expressed its solidarity with Greece in relation to the Turkish-Libyan memorandum, fully supporting the European position on this matter.

Germany expresses complete solidarity with Greece regarding Turkish-Libyan memorandum

“The president of the European Commission and the president of the European Council have already made their position clear. We share this [position] and I would like to emphasise that we already made clear in 2019 and reaffirmed again in 2025 that Turkiye and Libya must respect the sovereignty and the sovereign rights of all European Union member states and that maritime delimitation must be made in accordance with the international laws in force,” said German foreign ministry spokesperson Kathrin Deschauer.

“The position of the EU and the German government as a member of the EU is absolutely clear: maritime zone delimitation must – and this of course applies equally for the Mediterranean – be carried out on the basis of the current international law of the sea and with the participation of the coastal states involved. European partners have our solidarity on this,” she added.

Asked if Germany would support possible sanctions against Libya, given that Europe maintains several support programmes in that country, the spokesperson said that this went “too far” while repeating that the German government’s position “is very clear”.

“We will certainly take the opportunity to raise the issue for discussion with those who support this position,” Deschauer added, referring to the memorandum, while stressing:

“We reject it. We have a clear position (…) this is a very clear EU position, which the EU continues to uphold, as does the German government. This is our position, and everything further will be discussed within the European framework.”
