Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday chaired an inter-ministerial meeting with a delegation from the network of resilient cities, focusing on further improving cooperation between the government and municipalities on the civil protection. Participants explored ways to strengthen the resilience of cities and peri-urban areas.
According to government sources, the meeting included an assessment of new tools available for civil protection, such as a new risk map currently being prepared, which will provide a detailed risk rating for forest fires based on scientific criteria.
Participants also considered the possibility of the network undertaking a comprehensive inventory of firefighting equipment, project vehicles, and trained volunteers available in each municipality across Greece.
Members of the network put forward proposals focused on enhancing the prevention of natural disasters, especially wildfires, by effectively utilising municipal resources. They also aimed to strengthen the response capabilities of local government organisations during crises.
The meeting also discussed the establishment of local crisis management centres, better preparedness of local authorities in civil protection, and the upgrading of training programmes for municipal officials responsible for ensuring urban resilience.
