Authorities at two Greek prisons foiled attempts to smuggle mobile phones and other contraband into their facilities using drones over the weekend.
At the Drama prison in northern Greece, a security guard early Saturday spotted an unmanned aerial vehicle approaching the yard while inmates were outside. Officials immediately activated the prison’s anti-drone system, forcing the device to drop its package into a designated “dead zone” within the facility.
The confiscated items included several mobile phones and SIM cards, charging cables, a multi-tool knife, headphones and lamps.
In a similar incident a day later at the Larissa prison, central Greece, an officer observed an inmate retrieving a package that had been dropped into the yard. A subsequent search of the wing’s cells uncovered two mobile phones and two SIM cards. Authorities also recovered the drone, which was carrying charging cables.
